Sacramento State saw an influx of visits last weekend as transfer and first-year students from across California attend the first Admitted Student Weekend event since the pandemic hit.

Admitted Student Weekend educates students on what their tenure at Sacramento State will consist of, including what classes they may need to take and the potential programs their major department offers, all while providing enjoyable activities to meet fellow peers and experience the campus.

The event, open to all admitted and prospective students, lasted from April 29 until May 1 with the "Big Day" hosted on April 30, with those who have registered able to attend a Sacramento State baseball game at the end of the day free of charge.

The first day was filled with introductions to the campus, information tables, games, a planetarium presentation and plenty of food trucks for students to keep themselves fed as they learned more about where they may be spending the next years of their academic lives.

The main event to excite and inform attendees was held Saturday. Scattered information tables with advisers and faculty set the scene for visitors and parents looking to explore the campus.

There were over a dozen tables, each representing a different academic area of study, like political science, geography, international relations and childhood development.

Other department tables, from communications to social sciences to mathematics, had their own staff ready to hand out pamphlets and give an overview of their studies to curious students.

Campus tours, which took place every 15 minutes, were led by a guide of several dozen future CSU enrollees. Carrying drawstring bags freely given out by the admissions table, guests were able to consult advisors about financial aid, counseling, and any number of majors and learn about the exact process to enroll in courses in the coming months.

“The event was more informative than I expected. … I think Sac State is a beautiful campus and I’m excited to start there in Spring,” said Ben Eklund, an American River College student transferring to the university next year.

A surplus of QR codes granted students the ability to pursue other university operations and their own concerns online, as the high traffic made getting to every guest a difficult challenge.

“There was a little bit more traffic earlier in the day as the event started,” said William Hahn, a mechanical engineering professor at Sacramento State who sat at the mechanical engineering department table. “So it’s been a good turnout.”

Each day ended with a baseball game between e Sacramento State and California Baptist University.

Sunday, the final day of the event, was headlined by university housing, with tours included, and a showcase of Sacramento State clubs and organizations on campus.

Sacramento State’s fall semester begins Aug. 29, following transfer orientations held from June 13 until June 29 and new student orientations from July 18 to Aug. 5.
